国際公共経済学会は、市場経済における公共的・協同的要素に関心をよせる学者・実務家による意見交換と研究交流を目的に、「公共・協同経済研究情報国際センター」(CIRIEC：Centre Interdisciplinaire de Recherche et d'Information sur les Entreprises Collectives)の日本支部として、1985年に設立されました。

　「公共・協同経済研究情報国際センター」(CIRIEC：Centre Interdisciplinaire de Recherche et d'Information sur les Entreprises Collectives、International Centre of Research and Information on the Collective Economy)は、1947年にフランス人経済学者のEdgard MILHAUD氏によってスイス・ジュネーヴに設立されました。本部は1957年にベルギー・リエージュに移転しました。現在では、日本を含め13ヶ国に支部があります。

　CIRIEC本部は1997年に創立50周年を迎え、“The public, socal and cooperative economy and the general interest - Which roles in the XXIst century?”と題するシンポジウムを開き、記念誌“50 years in the life of CIRIEC”を刊行しました。
